Cómo identificar un billete de dólar falso

Pagar con un billete de dà ³lar falso es un delito federal y, cualquier persona extranjera condenada por ese delito podrà ­a perder toda posibilidad de ingresar o  emigrar a Estados Unidos porque  es una de las causas de inadmisibilidad, desde el punto de vista migratorio. En Estados Unidos,  turistas u otras personas con visas no inmigrantes asà ­ como los  nuevos inmigrantes se sorprenden cuando en los comercios y almacenes los empleados comprueban si el billete con el que se paga es falso. Es una prà ¡ctica habitual que no debe molestar. La razà ³n es que se estima que son falsos 100 de cada un millà ³n de billetes de dà ³lar en circulacià ³n, frente a 10 de cada millà ³n de francos suizos.    ¿Cuà ¡l es el billete de dà ³lar que se falsifica mà ¡s frecuentemente? Aunque dentro de Estados Unidos el billete falsificado mà ¡s comà ºn es el de $20, a nivel mundial es el de $100, siendo notoriamente famosos los producidos por el gobierno de Corea del Norte que, debido a su alta calidad, pueden pasar fà ¡cilmente como si fueran autà ©nticos cuando se les compara con los modelos antiguos de esos billetes. Precisamente para dificultar la produccià ³n ilegal de billetes de $100, el gobierno de los Estados Unidos  comenzà ³, en otoà ±o de 2013,   a poner en circulacià ³n billetes de esa denominacià ³n que son prà ¡cticamente imposibles de falsificar. Las caracterà ­sticas de los billetes de $100, cuyo costo de produccià ³n es superior al de su denominacià ³n, son las siguientes:   Lazo azul tridimensional de seguridad.La frase ONE HUNDRED USA aparece inscrita en letra muy pequeà ±a en el tintero y en la marca de agua està ¡ inscrito USA 100.La frase The United States of America aparece en letras diminutas en el cuello de Benjamin Franklin.La cifra 100 en grande cambia de color cuando se inclina el billete.La Campana de la Libertad que està ¡ dentro del tintero cambia de color segà ºn se incline el billete.Las imà ¡genes alternas de campanas y del nà ºmero 100 cambian de color, segà ºn el à ¡ngulo con el que se incline el billete.La tira a la izquierda de la cara de Benjamin Franklin sà ³lo es visible si el billete se pone bajo un foco de luz.Grabado tipo entalladura que le da al billete una textura especial. 10 tips para identificar los billetes de dà ³lar falsos Se puede aprender a identifica los billetes de dà ³lar falsos de todo tipo de denominacià ³n siguiendo las siguientes tips simples y sencillas. 1. Hilo de seguridad Es posible verlo al levantar el billete y observarlo a contraluz. Se verà ¡ un hilo que atraviesa el billete de arriba a abajo. En realidad, es un trozo de polià ©ster incrustado en el billete que contiene la denominacià ³n del billete -de cuà ¡nto es- en letras muy pequeà ±itas. Este hilo de seguridad se ve tanto si se mira al billete por el lado en el que aparece el retrato (anverso) como desde el reverso. Si se pone debajo de luz ultravioleta, el hilo se ilumina con un color fluorescente, uno distinto para cada uno de los distintos valores que pueden tener los billetes de dà ³lar americano. Si se pone debajo de una là ¡mpara con luz negra, tambià ©n se puede comprobar que aparece el color correspondiente a la denominacià ³n del billete. Sin embargo, los billetes de $1 y $2 no tienen este hilo de seguridad. 2. Cambio de color Si se mira el billete por el anverso y se inclina con un pequeà ±o movimiento es posible detectar un cambio de color de los nà ºmeros situados en la parte inferior de la derecha en la que se expresa de cuà ¡nto valor es el billete. Si se trata de un billete que se imprimià ³ recientemente, el cambio se ve mucho mejor que en otros que son mà ¡s antiguos. Tampoco tienen esta medida de seguridad  los billetes de $1 y $2. 3. Marca de agua Cuando se levanta el billete y se pone a contraluz, se puede observar una imagen similar a la del anverso y que no està ¡ bien definida.   Forma parte del papel y sà ³lo se ve asà ­. Los billetes de $1 y $2 no tienen, por ahora, marca de agua. Todos los demà ¡s, sà ­. 4. Tacto Las fà ³rmulas del papel en el que se imprimen los billetes y la tinta que se utiliza son secretas. Coincidencia de las cantidades Una de las formas clà ¡sicas de falsificar un billete es pegar muy bien y profesionalmente un nà ºmero en las esquinas donde aparece el valor del billete. Por ejemplo, aà ±adir un cero a un billete de $5 y asà ­ obtener uno de $50. Es recomendable comprobar siempre que la cantidad en nà ºmero corresponde con la que se especifica en letra en el anverso y reverso del billete y que la cantidad que dice en nà ºmero corresponde con la correcta del retrato. Estas son: $1: George Washington (retrato pequeà ±o). El 45 por ciento de los billetes que se imprimen son de esta denominacià ³n. Son los mà ¡s usados y està ¡n en circulacià ³n una media de menos de 6 aà ±os.$2: Thomas Jefferson (retrato pequeà ±o). Son raros, sà ­ que existen$5: Abraham Lincoln. El color de fondo es violeta (pà ºrpura). Retrato grande.$10: Alexander Hamilton. El color de fondo es naranja. Retrato grande.$20: Andrew Jackson. Fondo de color verde y retrato grande.$50: Ulysses S. Grant. Fondo rosa y retrato grande.$100: Benjamin Franklin. Retrato grande, fondo de color. Es el segundo billete con mayor cantidad de unidades en circulacià ³n, despuà ©s del de $1.   Està ¡ previsto que en el aà ±o 2020 se presentarà ¡n pà ºblicamente billetes con figuras de mujeres, como por ejemplo Harriet Tubman en los de $20, pero tardarà ¡n todavà ­a varios aà ±os en estar en circulacià ³n, porque se tarda mucho tiempo en desarrollar billetes nuevos con todas los requisitos de seguridad. Por otro lado, pagar con un billete de dà ³lar falso es un delito federal, lo que se conoce en inglà ©s como una felony. La condena por un delito es causa para cancelar la visa o para que negar su renovacià ³n. Incluso es causa para que nieguen una visa de inmigrante o un ajuste de estatus para obtener la tarjeta de residencia permanente, conocida como green card. Consejos para turistas extranjeros en Estados Unidos Para evitar problemas, ademà ¡s de no pagar con billetes falsos, se recomienda tener claro con  quà ©Ã‚  frecuencia se puede volver a ingresar a EEUU como turista  para evitar que las autoridades cancelen o revoquen la visa de turista. Before, I’d just thought I was fighting against people using techniques similar to Alchemist methods to expose Amberwood to drugs. It had been a moral issue. If I followed the normal chain of command, I supposed the thing would be to tell Keith and let him tell our superiors. If he did, however, I had no doubt he’d claim all the credit for uncovering this. I couldn’t let that happen – and not because I wanted the glory for myself. Too many Alchemists erroneously believed Keith was an upstanding person. I didn’t want to fuel that. But before I did anything, I needed to figure out the rest of the vials’ contents. I could make guesses at the metallic residues but wasn’t sure if, like the blood, they came straight from the Alchemist catalog or were just knockoffs. And if they were our formulas, it wasn’t obvious at a glance which were which. The silver powder in one vial, for example, could have been a few different Alchemist compounds. I had the means to do some experiments and figure it out, but one substance eluded me. It was clear, slightly thick liquid that had no discernable odor. My guess was that it was the narcotic used in the celestial tattoos. Vampire blood wouldn’t cause that high, though it would absolutely explain the crazy athleticism of the so-called steel tattoos. So, I began running what experiments I could, while going on with the normal routines of school. We were playing basketball inside in PE this week, so Jill was participating – and being subjected to Laurel’s biting comments. I kept hearing her say things like, â€Å"You’d think she’d be a lot better since she’s so tall. She can practically touch the basket without jumping. Or maybe she should turn into a bat and fly up there.† I winced. I had to keep telling myself not to make a big deal of the jokes, but every time I heard one, panic seized me. I had to hide it, though. If I wanted to help Jill, I needed the teasing stopped as a whole – not just the vampire stuff. Drawing more attention to those comments wouldn’t help. Micah tried to comfort Jill after each attack, which clearly infuriated Laurel more. Laurel’s weren’t the only comments reaching my ears. Since my raid of the tattoo parlor, I’d been hearing a fair amount of interesting information from Slade and his friends. â€Å"Well, did he say when?† Miss Carson was taking attendance, and Slade was interrogating a guy named Tim about a recent trip to the parlor. Tim shook his head. â€Å"No. They’re having some trouble with their shipment. It sounds like the supplier’s got it but doesn’t want to give it up for the same price.† â€Å"Damn it,† growled Slade. â€Å"I need a touch-up.† â€Å"Hey,† said Tim. â€Å"What about me? I don’t even have my first one.† It wasn’t the first comment I’d overheard from someone who already had a celestial and needed a touch-up. Addiction in action. Jill’s face was hard when PE ended, and I had the feeling she was trying not to cry. I tried talking to her in the locker room, but she simply shook her head and headed off for the showers. I was about to go there myself when I heard a shriek. Those of us who were still by the lockers raced to the shower room to see what was happening. Laurel jerked the curtain back from her stall and came running out, oblivious to the fact that she was naked. I gaped. Her skin was covered in a fine sheen of ice. Water droplets from the shower had frozen solid on her skin and in her hair, though in the steamy heat of the rest of the room, they were already starting to melt. I glanced over to the shower itself and noticed that the water coming out of the faucet was also frozen solid. Laurel’s screams brought Miss Carson running in – shocked as the rest of us at the seemingly impossible thing we’d just witnessed. She finally declared it was some kind of freak problem with the pipes and the water heater. That was typical of my fellow humans. They’d always reach for far-fetched scientific explanations before delving into fantastic ones. But I had no problem with that. It made my job easier. Miss Carson tried to get Laurel to go into a different shower to get the ice off, but she refused. She waited for it all to melt and then toweled herself off. Her hair was atrocious when she finally left for her next class, and I smirked. I guessed there’d be no hair-tossing today. â€Å"Jill,† I called, catching sight of her trying to blend in to the group of girls leaving the locker room. She glanced guiltily over her shoulder but didn’t otherwise acknowledge that she’d heard me. I followed close behind her. â€Å"Jill!† I called out again. She was definitely avoiding me. In the hall, Jill spotted Micah and hurried over to him. Smart. She knew I wouldn’t ask any dangerous questions with him around. I almost wondered if I should bring her along with Adrian and me but finally decided against it. I didn’t think Adrian needed any distractions. I also wasn’t sure how interesting it would be for her. If she was really that eager to watch Adrian go through job interviews, she could â€Å"listen in† through the bond. I met up with Adrian after school the next day, and for the first time in ages, neither Lee nor Keith was around the old house. Clarence was, however, and he practically ran me down when I entered. â€Å"Did you hear?† he demanded. â€Å"Did you hear about that poor girl?† â€Å"What girl?† I asked. â€Å"The one killed in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago.† â€Å"Oh, yeah,† I said, relieved there was no new death. â€Å"It was tragic. We’re lucky there are no Strigoi here.† He gave me a surprisingly knowing look. â€Å"It wasn’t Strigoi! Haven’t you paid attention? It was them. The vampire hunters.† â€Å"But they drank her blood, sir. Didn’t you say vampire hunters are human? No human would have any reason to drink Moroi blood.† He turned away from me and paced the living room. I glanced around, wondering where Adrian was. â€Å"Everyone keeps saying that!† said Clarence. â€Å"As though I don’t already know that. I can’t explain why they do what they do. They’re a strange lot. They worship the sun and have weird beliefs about evil and honor – more unusual than even your beliefs.† Well, that was something. At least he knew I was human. Sometimes I wasn’t sure. â€Å"They also have strange views on which vampires should die. They kill all Strigoi without question. With Moroi and dhampirs, they’re more selective.† â€Å"You sure know a lot about them,† I said. â€Å"I’ve made it my business to, ever since Tamara.† He sighed and suddenly seemed very, very old. â€Å"At least Keith believes me.† I kept my face expressionless. â€Å"Oh?† Clarence nodded. â€Å"He’s a good young man. You should give him a chance.† My control slipped, and I knew I was scowling. â€Å"I’ll try, sir.† Adrian entered just then, much to my relief. Being alone with Clarence was freaky enough without him actually praising Keith Darnell. â€Å"Ready?† I asked. â€Å"You bet,† said Adrian. â€Å"I can’t wait to be a productive member of society.† I gave his outfit a once-over and had to bite off any comments. It was nice, but of course, his clothes always were. Jill had claimed I had an expensive wardrobe, but Adrian’s blew mine away. Today he wore black jeans and a burgundy button-down shirt. The shirt looked like it was some sort of silk blend, and he wore it loose and unbuttoned. His hair was carefully styled to look like he’d just rolled out of bed. Too bad he didn’t have my hair’s texture. My hair did that without any styling at all. I had to admit, he looked great – but he didn’t look like he was going to a job interview. He looked like he was about to go clubbing. This left me kind of conflicted. I found myself admiring him nonetheless and was again reminded of that impression I got from him sometimes, like he was some kind of work of art. It was a little disconcerting, particularly since I had to keep telling myself that vampires were not attractive in the same way humans were. Fortunately, the practical part of me soon took over, chastising me that it didn’t matter if he looked good or not. What mattered was that he looked inappropriate for job interviews. I shouldn’t have been surprised, though. I was an educational assistant at St. Vladimir’s?† I shrugged. â€Å"It was the closest you had to a job.† â€Å"And Lissa was my supervisor, huh? I hope she gives me a good referral.† When Vasilisa and Rose were still in school, Adrian had lived there and worked with Vasilisa on learning spirit. â€Å"Educational assistant† was kind of a stretch, but it made him sound like he could multitask and show up for work on time. He shut the folder and leaned back against the seat, closing his eyes. â€Å"How’s Jailbait? She seemed down the last time I saw her.† I considered lying but figured he’d probably find out the truth eventually, either from her directly or through his own deductions. Adrian’s judgment might be questionable, but I’d discovered he was excellent at reading people. Eddie claimed it came from being a spirit user and had mentioned something about auras, which I wasn’t quite sure I believed in. The Alchemists had no hard evidence that they were real. â€Å"Not good,† I said, giving him the full report as we drove. â€Å"That shower thing was hilarious,† he said when I finished. â€Å"It was irresponsible! Why can’t anyone see that?† â€Å"But that bitch had it coming.† I sighed. â€Å"Have you guys forgotten why you’re here? You of all people! You saw her die. Don’t you get how important it is for her to stay safe and keep a low profile?† Adrian was quiet for several moments, and when I glanced over, his face was uncharacteristically serious. â€Å"I know. But I don’t want her to be miserable either. She†¦ she doesn’t deserve it. Not like the rest of us.† â€Å"I don’t think we do either.† â€Å"Maybe you don’t,† he said with a small smile. â€Å"What with your pure lifestyle and all. I don’t know. Jill’s just so†¦ innocent. But out of the three positions I’d found, this one also had the most potential for future advancement. The firm was obviously doing well, judging from the lobby we waited in. Orchids grew in giant, well-placed vases, and there was even a fountain in the middle of the room. Three others waited in the lobby with us. One was a very nicely dressed woman in her forties. Opposite her was a man about the same age, sitting with a much younger woman whose lowcut blouse would’ve gotten her thrown out of Amberwood. Each time I looked at her, I wanted to cover her cleavage up with a cardigan. The three of them obviously knew each other, however, because they kept making eye contact and trading glares. Adrian studied each of them in turn and then turned to me. â€Å"This law firm,† he said in a low voice. â€Å"It specializes in divorce, doesn’t it?† â€Å"Yes,† I said. He nodded and took a few moments to process the information. Then, to my horror, he leaned over me and said to the older woman, â€Å"He was a fool, clearly. You’re a stunning, classy woman. Just wait. My assessment of his clubbing outfit had been correct. My brown skirt and ivory blouse apparently seemed more appropriate for an interview. â€Å"This is Adrian,† I said, pointing. â€Å"I’m just his sister, here for moral support.† â€Å"Very kind of you,† said Janet, looking a little perplexed. â€Å"Well, then. Shall we go talk, Adrian?† â€Å"You bet,† he said, standing. He started to follow her, and I jumped up. â€Å"Adrian,† I whispered, catching his sleeve. â€Å"You want to tell the truth? Do it in there. Do not embellish or make up crazy claims that you were a district attorney.† â€Å"Got it,† he said. â€Å"This is going to be a breeze.† If by breeze he meant fast, then he was right. It was actually at Spencer’s, and I’d gotten Trey to pull a few strings. While Adrian was interviewing in the back, I got a table and some coffee. Trey came to visit me after about fifteen minutes. â€Å"Is that really your brother?† he demanded. â€Å"Yes,† I said, hoping I sounded convincing. â€Å"When you said he was looking for a job, I pictured a male version of you. I was just back there and overhead him talking with my manager. She was explaining the cleanup he would have to do each night. When he came out in ten minutes, I was aghast. â€Å"How?† I demanded. â€Å"How could you have screwed this one up?† â€Å"When I got in, they said the manager was on the phone and would be a few minutes. So, I sat down and ordered a drink.† This time, I did lean my forehead against the steering wheel. â€Å"What did you order?† â€Å"A martini.† â€Å"A martini.† I lifted my head. â€Å"You ordered a martini before a job interview.† â€Å"It’s a bar, Sage. I figured they’d be cool with it.† â€Å"No, you didn’t!† I exclaimed. The volume of my voice surprised both of us, and he cringed a little. â€Å"You aren’t stupid, no matter how much you pretend to be! You know you can’t do that. You did it to screw around with them. You did it to screw around with me! That’s what this has all been about. You haven’t taken any of this seriously. You wasted these people’s time and mine, just because you had nothing better to do!† â€Å"That’s not true,† he said, though he sounded uncertain. â€Å"I do want a job†¦ just not these jobs.† â€Å"You’re in no position to pick and choose. You want out of Clarence’s? These were your tickets. You should’ve been able to get any of them if you’d just put in a little effort. You’re charming when you want to be. He hesitated like he might disagree but finally conceded with a swift nod. He left the car and strode toward the house, lighting a cigarette as he went. Fury and frustration burned within me. I was a fool to ever start letting myself feel friendly toward him. Had I really thought he was a work of art earlier? More like a piece of work. My feelings were still churning when I arrived back at Amberwood. I particularly cringed at the thought of running into Jill in our room. I had no doubt she’d know everything that had happened with Adrian, and I had no desire to hear her defend him. But when I walked into my dorm, I never made it past the front desk. Answer: Introduction The clashes that characterize South Sudan is as a consequence of the clashes between the armed rebel factions and the government forces. South Sudan conflict has led to the violation of human rights and the displacement of thousands and thousands of citizens (Casey-Maslen, 2014: 93). In 2013, the political disagreement between Salva Kiir, the current president, and Riek Machar, the former Vice President triggered the deep-rooted tensions between the various ethnic groups and subjected the country to the threat of civil war. Even though the two warring parties signed a peace agreement in 2015, they have repeatedly breached it, intensifying insecurity and renewing war in various parts of the country. Limited humanitarian access, forced displacement of people, and a significant decline in markets as a result of the war has left one-third of the country without adequate food. For this reason, international organizations such as Oxfam and Mercy Corps are working with the local community t o boost agriculture and help them recover from the effects of the conflict. Overview of the Humanitarian Crisis in South Sudan South Sudan is considered globally as one of the least developed and youngest country. However, the country as a result of mismanagement, corruption, neglect, and conflict has suffered significantly (Johnson, 2011: 133). Even though the country signed a peace agreement in 2015, there is increased conflict in the country due to the constant breach of the ceasefire by the conflicting parties. As a consequence, the humanitarian suffering and crisis in the country are quite alarming. For instance, the violation of human rights and the international humanitarian law continue unabated. There is also a dramatic increase in sexual violence by soldiers in the countrys capital Juba. In addition to this violence, approximately 2.5 million citizens are displaced, and 831,000 of these individuals are refugees in the neighboring countries (European Commission, 2016: 1). To make matters worse, violence and access restrictions hinder humanitarian operations, and since the commencement of the conflic t, 55 humanitarian staffs have succumbed to death as a result of violence. For this reason, necessary measures need to be taken to ensure unhindered and safe humanitarian access to the suffering citizens. Critical Analysis of the Third Sectors, Business, and the State Actions during the Crisis Actions are being taken by various stakeholders to ensure that Southern Sudan becomes peaceful. For instance, the state has taken the initiative of welcoming countries in the region to help them reach an agreement with the rebels. Since the commencement of violence in the country, IGAD (the Intergovernmental Authority on Development) has directed its efforts towards engaging the conflicting parties with the aim of putting an end to the conflict. Since January 2014, IGAD has managed to hold six peace talks between the conflicting parties. However, the talks are often characterized by disagreements and tensions leading to considerable delays and setbacks (Hutton, 2014: 67). As a consequence of these tensions, the state has not managed to make a deal with the conflicting parties in order to end the current conflict in South Sudan. The business sector, on the other hand, is channeling its efforts to enhance the stability of the companies in the conflict-ridden country. However, these companies are struggling because running business is increasingly becoming expensive. To start with, getting hard currency, especially the United States dollar is an uphill task whereas the South Sudanese pound value has considerably declined (Byaruhanga, 2015: 8). For all these reasons, businesses have been compelled to double commodity prices to make profits. Third sectors including non-governmental organizations are using their resources to enhance the well-being of the Sudanese population. For instance, Mercy Corps is helping displaced people, especially those who have shifted to the countryside to plant more food to sustain their families. The organization is also providing vulnerable individuals with financial assistance to buy food in the domestic market. The organization also works with business people to ensure that the ma rket in South Sudan thrives despite the escalating conflict (MercyCorps, 2015: 6). Oxfam, an international organization, is also coordinating an emergency food distribution as well as providing income and fuel to support individuals displaced as a result of the conflict. The organization is also rehabilitating the destroyed water system to enhance the population access to clean and safe water. Oxfam is also involved in constructing sanitation facilities in settlements and camps to counter the spread of waterborne disease. Through its long-term development initiative, Oxfam is working with other partners in the country to rebuild livelihoods and boost agriculture while at the same time focusing on reconciliation and peace-building initiatives and good governance (Oxfam International, 2016: 2). The organization also distributes farming tools and seeds to displaced communities and trains them on contemporary farming methods. CARE internal provides the displaced individuals with healthc are in spite of the increasing tension in the country. Critical Evaluation of the Appropriateness Of The Responses of The Parties Involved The response to the crisis in South Sudan is appropriate. However, failure by the warring parties to adhere to the ceasefire terms and conditions is the reason behind the escalating conflict in South Sudan. As a consequence, thousands and thousands of South Sudan population are being displaced, and there is an urgent need for humanitarian assistance. As a result of the consequence of breaching the ceasefire, the relationship between South Sudan government and the international humanitarian community continues to deteriorate. In fact, the relationship is increasingly becoming less collaborative and more confrontational (Falcao Fox, 2015: 5). Despite the significant role that NGOs are doing to empower the local community, they are facing considerable violence, harassment, and intimidation. In fact, 55 of humanitarian assistance staffs have succumbed to death as a consequence of the conflict. For this reason, more punitive measures need to be taken against the country including airstri kes and extensive patrols if negotiation has failed to yield the intended outcomes. Conclusion According to the existing evidence, it is obvious that the crisis in South Sudan is as a consequence of the conflict between the rebels and the government forces. The root cause of the clashes is attributable to the unresolved tensions between the major ethnic groups in the country as well as corruption and mismanagement of the oil resources in the nation. Despite the government and the rebels efforts to reach an agreement, the two warring parties have continually breached the ceasefire resulting in insecurity and continued conflict in the region. Underachievers This paper addresses the issue of how a negative self concept can effect achievement of gifted students. it specifically focuses on the effect of academic achievement, discusses what it means to be both an underachiever and have a negative self concept, how to identify these students and what family and teachers can do about this. PAPER Many academically gifted children underachieve in school classrooms as a result of the fact that they do not know how to achieve higher a or they feel they cannot achieve a task that they are expected to be able to but find it too difficult. Underachievement is a pervasive problem which results in a tremendous waste of human potential among our most able students. In fact, in 1972 the U.S. Commissioner of Education estimated that 17.6% of gifted ( both academically and non-academically) students drop out of high school, and that percentage is probably even higher today. (Schnieder, 1997) and to add a New Zealand perspective, Moltzen (in McAlpine and Moltzen, 1996) suggest that 10-20% of students who do not graduate are gifted. These students hold a negative self concept of themselves as they have not received the support necessary to be able to work and achieve at their own level. There are many different contributing factors to the establishing of self concepts and how they effect gifted children. . This paper addresses how gifted children form negative self concepts of themselves and how can effect their achievement in an academic school setting. First it is necessary to provide the background knowledge and the definitions on areas that are to be discussed. For the purpose of this paper the definition of self concept is a persons view of self, in relation to their perception of feed back from others. This view occurs in both academic and non-academic areas. (Fox, 1993 in Rawlinson, 1996) To specifically focus on the academic area of self concepts which is being addressed in this paper , an academic self concept is a relatively stable set of attitudes and feelings reflecting self evaluation of ones ability to successfully perform basic school related tasks such as reading, writing, spelling and maths. (Boersma & Chapman,1992 in Rawlinson, 1996) Self concepts tend to be domain specific, meaning that pupils have different self concepts towards different areas of the curriculum (Schunk,1990) but to avoid complications throughout this paper all academic subjects will all be inclusive with each other. The definition of underachievement is not as straight forward as that of self concept as many people have different ideas on what it means to underachieve. Wellington and Wellington (1965) suggest that under achievers have a low level of aspiration. In its simplest form it can be defined as a unfulfilled potential (Moltzen in McAlpine and Moltzen, 1996) but neither of these definitions provide much capture the essence of underachievement in gifted children as they do not provide enough detail as to the difference between what they are achieving and what they could achieve. Frankenstein and Blade Runner Essays Frankenstein and Blade Runner Paper Frankenstein and Blade Runner Paper Essay Topic: Frankenstein Mary Shelley’s iconic novel, Frankenstein, and Ridley Scott’s cinematographic masterpiece, Blade Runner, are, on the surface, remarkably dissimilar, not solely in terms of medium, but in absolute contextual disparity. They are, of course, very much products of their time, affected and inspired by the conundrums and pessimistic predictions of their own cultural and societal contexts; condemnations of each respective composers predictions for humanity. It is interesting to note, therefore, that both texts are alike in their thematic complexity, however differently these timeless themes are expressed, and that the textual techniques of both only serve to heighten the inevitable character, plot and thematic comparisons which have inevitably occurred, as is to be expected of a film whole prophetic quality and social significance are timeless, and a novel which was to become an irrefutable literary classic. It is important to note that the world of Mary Shelley in 1818 bore a striking resemblance to that of Ridley Scott in the early 1980’s, and indeed, this is the underlying catalyst for the contemporary cultural significance of the texts. The 1800’s for example, was a time of Revolution and Industrialism; a time in which scientific advances by the likes of Erasmus Darwin and Andrew Crosse, as well as a general ascent of idealistic romanticism, had colossal influence upon not only society; but upon Shelley’s pathetic fallacy and sensory imagery-laden writing style. : One must recognise the stark analogy amidst such a time of scientific ambition and the 1980’s, a time when, similarly, rampant computerisation threatened to render the labour of man irrelevant, as scientific experimentation in genetic engineering and globalisation shook the very foundations of morality and ethical thought. Within Blade Runner too, irrefutably a condemnation of the future implications of such a time, Scott utilises establishing shots and neon, filtered lighting to intimidate; to illuminate a litany of Asian faces, whilst technology, and of course the replicants themselves, are created without second thought, and ultimately, with disastrous implications for those concerned; â€Å"Commerce is our goal here at Tyrell, more human than human is our motto. Rachel is an experiment, nothing less and nothing more. † Which, of course, brings to the fore the undeniable and universal thematic complexity of both Frankenstein and Blade Runner; the predominant catalyst for their newfound cultural significance. First and foremost is the theme upon which the texts are fundamentally built, that of emulating the divine, as well as its ramifications. Mary Shelley herself, in fact, states in the preface to her novel, â€Å"frightful must it be; for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavor to mock the stupendous Creator of the world†, and indeed, Victor Frankenstein himself essentially serves as an analogy, almost a deterrent, of the unbridled scientific advances of Shelley’s time. Despite Frankenstein’s extreme intelligence, being â€Å"the envy of [his] peers† and the fact that he â€Å"became capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter†, his lack of compassion for his creation, â€Å"the miserable monster whom I had created†, in conjunction with his desired abandonment of it, â€Å"I sincerely hope, that all these employments are now at an end, that I am at length free†, has catastrophic consequences. Essentially, Shelley’s characterisation symbolises man as a fallible creature, one who will by no means possess the characteristics of God, despite the insurmountable increases in technological advancement which today are the norm.

If you teach, theres a good chance youve used Twitter, Facebook, and even Pinterest to draw your students attention to their work in exciting new ways. But now theres a new app on the scene: Vine. Luckily the blog at OnlineUniversities.com was on hand to help us all become a little more familiar with this new social forum and figure out how to implement it in our ever evolving classrooms. Take a look and let us know what you think! What is Vine? Vine, a mobile app created by Twitter, allows users to create and share short video clips. Like Twitter, brevity is valued and video clips can’t exceed six seconds in length, so users have to be quick about getting their point across. Vine is a pretty new addition to the social media canon. The service was founded in June of 2012, but just launched to the public in January of 2013 as a free app on the iPhone and iPod Touch. In this time, Vine  has seen amazing growth, with users tweeting an average of 2,300 Vine videos every hour. Below is an example of the creativity one can bring to the app. Why Vine is Special Just like Twitter, Vine imposes limitations on how much content users can generate. While this might seem constricting at first, if Twitter has proven anything it’s that it’s easy to say a lot with very little. Limitations, in this way, aren’t always a bad thing. In fact, the constraints may actually force users to get to the point more quickly and to be more creative and innovative about how they present their content. Even though Vine has only been available for a few months, people are already using the application in a wide range of creative ways. This bodes well for its staying power and the future role Vine may play in all aspects of social media communication. It also shows how diverse a simple, six-second piece of media can really be, as everyone from  Paul McCartney  to Cadbury have begun using it to connect through ideas and experiences. It’s the combination of the simplicity and the social aspects of Vine that may just lead it to be a serious force going forward in education and beyond. Vines Potential in Education Looking to learn how to use Vine and get a better idea of how to use it in the classroom? Dr. Justin Marquis, a professor of educational technology, offers his take on Vine’s use in the higher education classroom in this informative video for educators. Educators can also challenge their students to express their understanding of materials in a Vine. Imagine the depth to which students would need to know something in order to convey it in only six seconds. The creativity and understanding that it would take for students to encapsulate the major theme of a work of literature or the seminal achievement of a great scientist or mathematician in six seconds can help them develop exactly the kinds of skills that they need to be successful in a fast-paced, hyper-connected global economy. Tips for Using Vine Not sure how to begin your Vine explorations? Here are some tips to get you creating, sharing, and loving Vine. Get creative.  While you may only have six seconds, there’s a virtually limitless number of ways you can use that time. Don’t be afraid to get creative and try something new. Who knows, you may just spark a rash of copycats. Check out Twitter or the Vine app to see how others are using Vine.  If you’re not sure what Vine would be good for or how others are using it, then check out the app itself or search for  #vine  on Twitter. You’ll see some examples of everyday people using Vine for a wide range of purposes. Know Vine’s limitations.  The  limitations of Vine  can inspire creativity, but do inhibit functionality, so it’s important to know what the app can and can’t do. That way, you won’t be surprised if you can’t use it in the way you’d like. Get inspired by businesses.  Businesses have been some of the  most creative  early adopters of Vine. While not educational per se, you can use their videos to inspire your own lessons that appeal to your demographic (students). Use it to market your lessons.  Marketing techniques  can not only help businesses to sell products, but they can also help you â€Å"sell† information to students. A Vine video may engage students in a new way, or inspire them to check out information related to what you’re studying in class. Integrate Vine into your current Twitter usage.  Vine, while a separate app, is a part of Twitter, so if you plan to use it, try to simply integrate it into the ways you’re already using Twitter in the classroom.
